I-5
The backbone of Seattle freight movement, but also the most congested interstate in Washington. Northbound bottlenecks at the Ship Canal Bridge and Mercer Street exits. Southbound stacks up from downtown through Tukwila. Plan to avoid 6-9 AM and 3-7 PM or budget extra hours.
I-90
East-west interstate from Seattle across the Cascades via Snoqualmie Pass (3,015 ft). The floating bridge across Lake Washington connects to Bellevue and I-405. Chain requirements are common October through April on the pass — WSDOT chain-up area is at Exit 47 (North Bend).
I-405
Eastside bypass around Seattle connecting Renton to Bellevue, Kirkland, and Lynnwood. Toll express lanes exist but CMVs are restricted to general purpose lanes. Exit 4 (Renton) puts you near the SODO industrial area via surface streets.
SR-99 (Aurora Ave / Alaskan Way)
Runs through Seattle as a surface street. The SR-99 tunnel downtown has a 13'6" clearance and no oversized loads — if you're over height, you cannot use it. Use I-5 or surface streets as an alternative through the downtown core.
